Course Syllabus

 

Course Length:            1 period /  Full Year

Grade Level:                10th – 12th grade

Pre-requisite:                Beginning Auto/ B- or better or Instructor waiver

Instructor:        Mr. Sitton   Auto Shop 885-5066 

 

All Automotive classes are designed with the intent of helping students familiarize themselves with real world working demands and requirements. Punctuality and treatment of fellow students (co-workers), respecting public, private and personal property are very important parts of the Automotive program.  These are just as important if not more, than the technical knowledge and skills required to perform your daily work task.

 

STUDENT EXPECTIONS:

            Be on time

Be ready to learn when you arrive. Have classroom tools ready to go (pencil, paper, and text book-if we are using it.)

Respect others’ feelings and circumstances (put yourself in their shoes)

Be a problem solver

BE SELF MOTIVATED

Have a POSITIVE ATTITUDE (attitudes are contagious! Is yours worth catching?)

Be HONEST

 

Classroom operation:

                                    Students will work in partner groups

                                    Partners will be made up of two people

                                    Each person is responsible for knowing the material individually

                                    Each student is expected to participate in the day to day chores and responsibilities to keep the shop and classroom clean,organized, and operating efficiently.

Engines – small gas engine

                                    Engine principles of operation  2/4 stroke theory

Small Gas Engine -Fuel systems  -  Carburetor

                                                                                    Seven circuits

                                                                                    Adjustments

 

Lubrication systems -  splash and pressure systems

 

                                    Ignition systems-  Magneto and battery powered systems

                                   

Cooling systems- Air/ water cooled engines

 

Electrical – Atech boards

Basic circuit operation

Troubleshooting various circuits

On car troubleshooting

 

                        Starting & Charging Systems

 

Engine performance-   Electronic Ignition systems theory and testing

                                                            Computer controls

 

 

Brake systems-            Basic drum and disc brakes

                                                            Hydraulic systems

 

                        Hydraulic Bench Tester-   Hydraulic principles- Pascal’s Law

                        Others as time permits

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

                                    Have a notebook every day  (notebook should include: Pencils, Pens, Paper and a calculator)

                                    Safety Glasses (brought from home or purchased at school -$4.00)

                                    Coveralls or shop coat (some available at school)

Grading:         20%     Tests   

                        15%     Quizzes                      

30%     Participation in lectures/discussions and classroom activities

25%     Notebook We use PENCILS for assignments and PENS to correct papers.

10%     Attitude (attendance, discipline record, punctuality, behavior, positive or negative influence in the class, etc.)
