Mrs. Alway

Prairie High School

U.S. History

Second Semester 2006 - 07

Responsibility:

Students are expected to take an active part in their education.  YOU are responsible for what you learn.  Read the student handbook because you are responsible for the rules it contains.

Basic Classroom Rules:

1.      Be on time.  Be in you’re assigned seat when the bell rings.

2.      Follow directions.

3.      Respect the teacher, your classmates and school property.

4.      Be prepared.  Bring all your materials to class every day.

5.      Remain in your seat.  You will work from bell to bell. You will remain in your seat until the bell rings.  If you finish early - read.

6.      Raise your hand to speak.

7.       NO:

·         food

·         drink

·         gum

·         cell phone

·         CD players or iPods

·         any other electronic devices

Supplies needed:

·         Textbook - must be in class everyday

·         notebook - 3 ring binder

·         pen: blue or black only (work in pencil will not be accepted!)

·         notebook paper

·         colored pencils and black fine tip sharpie

Cheating:

Cheating in any form will not be tolerated. (That includes helping another student to cheat.  It also includes copying answers from another student's paper.  Identical answers are proof of cheating.)  Read the student handbook concerning cheating.

Attendance:

Good attendance is important! Your participation grade will be based on your attendance and being on time to class.  You will be given 10pts each day for being on time, ready to work (all materials in class) and effort. You will lose half your daily points immediately if you are not in your seat ready to begin class when the bell rings.

Make-up Work:

Students will be able to make-up work following an excused absence according to the student handbook. It is the student's responsibility to find out what was missed by reading the calendar, asking fellow students or asking the teacher at the end of the class period.  The student is responsible for all work missed during a pre-arranged absence (including school activities). Regular weekly assignments and long term assignments remain due on the required due date no matter how many days missed. To make up a test or quiz a student must make arrangements to remain after school for the designated make-up time.  There will be no make-ups for the final project and final exam - you must be here on your assigned presentation date and in attendance for the class scheduled final exam.

Late Work:

Your work needs to be completed on time.  NO late work.  I MAY except late work on special needs basis so you need to speak with me about a problem before you plan to turn in the work late.  The decision will be made based on the effort you are giving to all work in class and your individual needs.

Classroom Discipline:

If a problem arises in class the following steps will be implemented:

      1.  Step One:          A verbal warning and a change in seating assignment.

     2.  Step Two:             A call home to discuss problem with parents.

     3.  Step Three:        Assignment to 45 minutes of after school detention

If necessary you will be removed to SMC immediately.

Rules for Written Work:

  1)  Full name, date, period, and title of assignment in upper right hand corner.

  2)  Use ink - blue or black only.  NO work in pencil.

Grading:

Students will be graded on two fundamental aspects of education: effort and product.  In order to succeed you will need to work hard on both aspects.

Effort includes being in class on time (in your seat when the bell rings) and actively participating in discussions, projects and activities.  Effort also includes listening to directions, staying on task, following the classroom rules and coming to class with all your materials: bring your work everyday.

The second aspect of your grade will include product.  Product encompasses daily assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, essays and other activities.  It is expected that the products produced in this class will be a high caliber of work. All written work will be turned in clean, legible, well organized, in blue or black ink and labeled with the proper heading.  (upper right-hand margin of page).  Please refer to the student handbook for the school's grading system.

The grade breakout is:

Daily Work - 30%,                     Tests - 40%,

Participation - 20%,      Final Exam - 10%
