Dear Future A.P. U.S. History Student,
Welcome to your first Advanced Placement class. A.P. U.S. History is a rigorous class that is meant to be the equivalent of a freshman college course preparing students to take the A.P. Exam and possibly earn students college credit. During the two-semester survey of American history you will study from the age of exploration and discovery to the present. Strong reading and writing skills, along with a willingness to devote considerable time to homework and studying are necessary to succeed. Emphasis is placed on critical and evaluative thinking skills, essay writing, and the interpretation of primary documents.
I am requiring you to complete a summer reading
assignment. The specifics of the assignment
are included with this letter. You are being asked to obtain and read a
biography on one of our Founding Fathers.
You can locate any of the books in the local public library; purchase
them online or at your local bookstore.
If you are not yet familiar with Powell’s bookstore on Burnside in
downtown
The assignment is due the first day of school / class. If you are unable to attend class the first day you will need to email me your paper before class begins on the first day to the my email address listed in my contact information. This will be your first grade of the marking period. You must complete this assignment by the first day of class, or it will not be accepted.
I am also asking you
to email me before Friday, June 22, 2007 at: alway.patty@bgsd.k12.wa.us
from your email or an email account you can access in order to can create a
contact list for the class. The contact
list will be used for distributing assignments, sending reminders, and
answering questions when they arise.
In the fall I will
be asking you to purchase a supplementary guidebook to your textbook. You will be able to purchase this text at the
beginning of the year from the ASB office.
I will also be giving additional reading assignments during Winter and
Spring Holidays.
We are going to have a fun yet rigorous year together studying all the nuances of U.S. History.
