School Board sends levy request to voters
The Battle Ground School Board has approved
a three-year school levy request for the
Feb. 9 ballot, the same date several other
local districts are asking their voters for
support.
The proposed levy is for $20.5 million in
calendar year 2011, $21.53 million in 2012
and $22.6 million in 2013. The current
levy, approved by voters in 2007 after a
string of defeated levies, expires at the
end of 2010. Among uses for the levy money
approved by voters in 2007 are:
Teachers
Classroom support such as teachers’ aides
Classroom supplies and textbooks
Campus security
Maintenance of buildings and grounds
Extracurricular and enrichment opportunities
for students
Training and professional development for
teachers
Battle Ground, like schools across the
state, saw substantial cuts in state support
this year and further cuts are widely
predicted for this coming legislative
session. Mary Beth Lynn, the school
district’s chief fiscal officer, said Battle
Ground received $5.7 million less from the
state this year than it would have received
under normal economic conditions.
To compensate for the reduction in state
support, cuts in course offerings and other
student programs were made, some fees were
increased and all of the district’s labor
groups, including district administrators,
took a 4 percent pay cut or the equivalent
in unpaid days off.
The estimated tax rate under the proposed
levy is $2.99 per $1,000 of assessed
property value the first year. That rate is
estimated to drop to $2.88 per $1,000 in
2012 and $2.78 in 2013. The estimated rate
for calendar year 2010, as approved by
voters in 2007, is $2.18.
Voter registration forms are available at
all Battle Ground schools. For information
about registration deadlines, voter
qualifications, etc., contact the Clark
County Elections Division at 360-397-2345.
