Strategic Math 1

Michael Coffin (Mr. Michael)

Welcome to Strategic Math. I am very happy to have you in my class. Whatever your history in math, in this class you will have the opportunity to be successful, and to learn the skills that will allow you to progress into Algebra. The knowledge that you gain here will be useful no matter where you decide to go in life.

I am excited to be working with each of you, and I will always do my best to help you. I want you to have the best experience possible in here while learning as much as you can. I will always treat everyone with respect and kindness, and I will expect the same from you. I look forward to getting to know all of you.

Some of the things you will need for this class:

• A three ring binder to hold your books, lined paper, graph paper, etc.
• Graph Paper (Start with 50 sheets)
• Scientific Calculator
• Pencils (I will have some extras, but they will run out quickly if you don’t bring your own)
• A red pen for grading

This is a partial list, I will let you know about other things we need before we need them.

Attendance:

It is essential that students attend class daily and are prompt. Much of the learning will take place within small group interaction and class instruction. If the student misses the class and/or doesn’t participate in the learning process (do the work), it will be difficult to make up the work and/or learn the concepts and skills necessary to succeed in this class. Please try to schedule appointments outside of the school day.

It is highly recommended that students keep up with the current work. If a student falls behind, it is difficult to catch up. The more the student misses, the more difficult it is to catch up.

Late Work:

Late work will only be accepted if the student is absent and if the absence is excused. Students have the number of days that they were absent to plus one more to complete and turn in late work.

Grading Criteria:

Grades will be determined as follows:

• 15% classroom participation and performance
• 35% daily work (this includes homework and in-class assignments)
• 50% Tests and Quizzes

You must achieve a “C” or better to advance to the next math course

• 93-100 A 77-79.9 C+
• 90-92.9 A- 73-76.9 C
• 87-89.9 B+ 70-72.9 C-
• 83-86.9 B 67-69.9 D+
• 80-82.9 B- 60-66.9 D
• Below 60 F
