Intensive 1A             Mrs. Homola (Room 409)               2006-2007

Description:  We will be using MathLab by Jim Slosson.  This is a lab based program which actively engages the students.  This class has been chosen to help students who have had struggles with mathematics for a long time.  It is very different from a traditional math class.  The students will do one or two labs each week and will often work in pairs or groups to complete these. Several times a week, the students will work individually or with a partner on skill worksheets.  The students will generally have time on Fridays to complete worksheets and labs as well as make corrections to previous assignments.

Materials:  Each student has a 3-ring binder provided by Mrs. HomolaThis binder is never, ever to leave the classroom!  It holds each student’s current assignments and assignments that need corrections.  Work in pen is not acceptable, and will be returned to be redone in pencil.  It is helpful if the students have a scientific calculator as some of the labs require it, but it is not necessary.  I do have calculators in class that they can borrow.

 Classroom Guidelines

          1.  Bring a pencil to class every day!

2.  Be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings.  Tardies will result in disciplinary action.

3.  Cell phones that are out during class will be confiscated and turned in to the office.

4.  Electronic devices are NOT allowed (i.e. CD players, iPods, etc.)

5.  No food or drink allowed in the classroom with the exception of bottled water.

6.  Please refrain from swearing or using other inappropriate language.

7.  Be respectful, consistently courteous and cooperative.

8.  Obey all school rules!!!

In the event that you exhibit behaviors that interfere with the class’s learning process, the following consequences will be used depending upon the severity of the problem.

  • Verbal or visual warning
  • Call to parent and/or parent conference
  • Removal from classroom to Student Management Center (SMC)
  • Lunch Detention or After-School Detention
  • Office referral

If you are removed from the classroom for disciplinary reasons before assignments are recorded or quizzes given, you will receive automatic zeroes on the assignments and/or quizzes for the day.

Grading:  Students must master and complete each and every assignment correctly.  Only quality work is acceptable.  Students will be allowed to complete, fix or redo work that is not of high quality until it meets standard.  Because of the multiple opportunities to achieve quality work, the grading scale is as follows:

100%                         A

95-99.99%               A-

90-94.99%               B

below 90%                F

Homework:  Students should not need to do homework unless they are sick for several days in a row.  There will be plenty of time to complete all work in class.

Cheating:  Cheating will not be tolerated.  All parties involved will receive automatic zeroes.  They will not be allowed to redo the assignment, quiz, or test.
