The purpose of foreign language study is to acquaint students with a culture, a language and a literature other than their own.

The basic goals of the department are:  

	to acquaint students with a culture, language and literature other than their own;
	to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary for effective communication in a foreign language;
	to provide a basis for those who plan to continue their language study at the university level.
