PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL
PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
SPORTS &
GAMES-CLASSGUIDELINES
MR. JANSSEN &
MR. BROOKS
Overview:
ü
The
school year is divided into 12, 3 week activity units.
ü
The
first and last week involve conditioning and fitness testing.
ü
The
remaining 10 weeks involve choices in individual & team sports, and
lifetime recreational activities.
ü
Each
day all students will participate in group warm up and fitness exercises.
ü
Following
these exercises, students participate in the sport, game, or fitness activity.
Grading:
ü
The
semester is divided into three 6-week grading periods.
ü
Grading
percentages------- Participation &
Effort= 50% Written Tests and Skills
Tests= 50%
ü
The
“participation & effort portion of each unit grade is based on daily points
achieved during the warm-up exercise segment and the sport segment.
ü
Intensity
of effort, attention to instruction, appropriate behavior, punctuality, proper
PE attire, and care of equipment are considered in the daily evaluation.
ü
In
each grading period “participation “ is worth
approximately 300 points.
ü
Examples
of point deductions from this grade segment might include:
o
Not
suiting = no PE clothes -15 points
o
Tardy
to class -5 points
o
Inappropriate
language -5 to 10 points
o
Lack
of effort -5 to 10
points
o
Not
following directions -5
o
Not
following class rules -5 to
10 points
Class Rules:
ü
Be
dressed and ready to go 5 minutes after the tardy bell rings
ü
Wait
in your assigned spot in the gym or hallway. No horseplay
ü
No
hats, no cell phones, no Ipods etc. –keep them locked
up in your locker
ü
Proper
attire means—t-shirt, gym shorts, tennis shoes
ü
No
food or drink in the locker room, PE hallway, weight room, and PE hallway.
ü
Every
student must have purchased their own lock & locker in the PE locker room.
ü
Students
may not leave the PE hallway until after the bell rings-wait behind doorway.
ü
Do
not leave the class without the permission of the instructor.
ü
Keep
all personal belongings locked up in your assigned locker (keep locked at all
times)
Participation &
Effort:
ü
Although
each one of us is blessed with different levels of talent, everyone is able to
try hard!
ü
We
expect each student to make a reasonable effort and work to his/her personal
abilities
ü
The
“written grade” is assessed through written assignments or quizzes covering the
rules of each sport.
ü
The
“skill” percentage is an evaluation of the student’s skill level in comparison
to the average abilities of high school students in that sport or activity.
Security of Personal
Belongings & Activity Fee:
ü
Security
from theft has been a problem in the past.
ü
In
an attempt to improve security, ALL students will use PHS issued locks on
lockers in the PE locker room. The
athletic locker room will not be used for PE.
ü
Locks
are rented for $4.00 per year. Lost
locks result in a $5.00 replacement charge.
ü
It
is each student’s responsibility to lock and secure their assigned locker.
ü
We
cannot guarantee security due to the huge number of students using the locker
room each day (800+)
ü
Please
make intelligent decisions in your attempt to protect yourself from theft. Don’t share locks or lockers with other
students and don’t give out your combination.
Absences—Excused and
Unexcused:
ü
15
points are lost (out of a 10 point day) when a student is absent.
ü
Points
lost through excused absences (through the PHS attendance office) can be
regained through completion of a “make-up” assignment. See attached:
ü
Make-ups
must be completed within 7 days of an absence.
If an absence is unexcused then the points cannot be made up.
ü
For
extended absences, students should contact the instructor to make arrangements
for increased time available to complete make-up requirements.
Non-Suiting:
ü
All
students are expected to dress with proper PE attire each and every day.
ü
If
the student chooses to non-suit, 15 points are lost and cannot be made up.
ü
The
first time it occurs a verbal warning is given.
The second non-suit warrants parent notification.
ü
The
third time is when the student is sent to SMC (a detention area next to the
attendance office)
ü
The
fourth time is the same as the third, but the student is also assigned extended
school detention.
ü
If
a fifth non-suit occurs, a mandatory parent conference is scheduled.
Make-Ups:
ü
Sports
& Games make-ups can be completed to regain the participation points missed
due to any excused absence, excused non-suit, or excused tardy. They must be made up within 7 school days.
ü
It
is always a good idea to “bank account” make-ups ahead of time.
ü
Make-up
options:
o
Weight Room workout-The weight room will be open on Wednesdays throughout the
school year from 2:20-3:00pm. Students
must dress down, sign-in, workout the entire time, and
sign-out before exiting the weight room.
Please check with the supervising teacher before leaving to ensure
make-up credit has been completed and documented.
o
Open Gym-off-season
PHS sports programs offer “open gym” on certain days of the week. See the PE staff for info. on
possible open gym times. During these
sessions, students can get involved in fitness conditioning or games. Students must sign in and sign out with the
instructor.
o
Written
Reports-can be arranged to satisfy PE make-ups.
Requirements for this option include:
§
Arrange
topic ahead of time with instructor.
§
Topic
should relate to current sport, fitness, or game activity.
§
Research
topic from encyclopedia, books, magazines, internet, etc.
§
Our
objective is that learning takes place through research.
§
Hand write the report in the student’s own vocabulary. Copied or typed reports are not
acceptable.
§
Attach
a copy of the article read and reported on.
§
The
length of 500 words satisfies one day of PE make-up.
Our desire is that all people concerned are award of this
PHS class grading policy. In this way we can all work toward a successful
experience for each student. Please sign
and return this class guidelines sheet after reviewing with your parents.
I have read the above class guidelines and I understand my
responsibility as a student to follow these guidelines in order to succeed in
this class.
