Course Objectives

1.      We will do a variety of fitness activities (exercise bands, weights, step and floor aerobics, circuit training, jogging/power walking, fitness games, etc.) 

2.      We will assess physical fitness using various tests and make goals to create healthy habits.

 

Grading

Activity Portion with Mrs. Thyron:

Daily Participation, effort, attendance, and punctuality          50%

 

Classroom Portion with Mrs. Domenici:

Assignments, tests, cooking labs, etc.                                    50%

 

To pass the class you must have a passing grade from both teachers.

 

Students earn 10 participation points per day.  They are based on being on time, prepared, working hard, and being respectful.  However, points can be lost for:

        


Non-suiting                           -15 points

Tardy                                  -5 points

Inappropriate language          -5 to  -10 points

Lack of effort or participation  -5 to -10 points

leaving PE hallway before bell        -10 points                    Cell phone/mp3player present         -5 points                             

Not following directions                   -5 to -10 points

Lack of materials                            -5 points

Absent                                           -15 points

Inappropriate shoes                        -10 points


 

Security of Personal Belongings

For security reasons all students will use PHS issued locks on PE lockers. Locks are rented for $4 per year, which include an activity fee for use of school equipment. (Lost locks result in a $5 replacement charge.) Students need to lock and secure their assigned lockers. Don’t share lockers or combinations with others. Clothes may be stored in the larger lockers during the class period, but must be returned to your assigned basket before you leave. Locker room doors are locked each class period, so be on time.   *Team lockers rooms will only be accessible before and after school.  If athletes would like to use this area to store their equipment they may rent a lock.  It will not be available during the school day.  Students enrolled in a PE class must rent a lock and use the regular locker room during the school day regardless of whether they are an athlete or not.

 

Activity Attire and Non-suiting

All students are expected to dress for class everyday, which includes a T-shirt, shorts/sweats, socks, and non-marking tennis shoes with closed backs and tied laces. If the student non-suits, 15 points are lost and can not be made up. Students are still expected to participate that day. Those who do not participate, will be sent to SMC (a detention area by the attendance office) for the class period. The first time a non-suit occurs, a verbal warning is given. The second non-suit warrants parent notification. The third time is when the student is sent to SMC during the class period and receives a school referral, and is assigned after school detention. The fourth time the student is sent to SMC during the class period, and will be assigned an after school 2-hour Wednesday community service. If a fifth non-suit occurs, a mandatory parent conference is scheduled, in addition to another after school 2-hour Wednesday community service.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Injury/Illness

No parent notes are needed. If the student is injured or ill he/she is expected to discuss the matter with the teacher. Limited activity may be assigned when appropriate. If a doctor’s visit warrants rest, a doctor’s note needs to be given to the teacher. Students are expected to still dress for class. Students with long term medical problems should make arrangements with the teacher and the counseling office if class changes are required.

 

Passes to leave class

You’re allowed 2 passes a semester if you must leave class.  Use these wisely.

 

Excused and Unexcused Absences

School related functions (field trips, concerts, athletic competitions) do not have to be made-up. The attendance office reports this information to the teacher if you filled out a prearranged absence form. Otherwise, fifteen points are lost when a student is absent. Points lost from excused absences through the PHS attendance office (for sickness, medical appointments, etc.) can be regained through completion of a “make-up” assignment (See below.) Make-ups must be completed within 5 days of an absence. If an absence is unexcused, participation points cannot be regained. For extended absences, students should contact the instructor to make arrangements for more time in order to complete make-ups if the days will be excused.

 

Make-ups

Make-ups should be completed to regain participation points missed due to any excused absence. They must be made-up in 5 school days. Make-up slips are available on teacher website, on her class clipboard, or in her office.  Make-up options are:

 

1.The weight room is supervised after school occasionally on Wednesdays. Students must sign-in the weight room by 2:20 pm and complete the activity by 3 pm. Please check out with the supervising teacher before leaving to ensure make-up credit has been completed and documented for 40 total minutes of weight training activity.

2. Submit an article related to health and fitness (from a magazine/internet/newspaper/book/etc.) and on a separate piece of paper write 10 questions and answers that capture the main points of the article. Cite the source and date.

3. Submit an article related to health and fitness (from a magazine/internet/newspaper/book/etc.) and on a separate piece of paper write a handwritten report (300-500 words) summarizing the main points. Cite the source and date.

4. Do at least 40 minutes of physical activity. Answer on a piece of paper the following: 1. Describe the activity and why you chose it. 2. Why is it good for you? 3. What fitness component(s) were utilized? (aerobic activity, anaerobic activity, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition) 4. What was your heart rate before starting the activity, during the middle of the workout, and immediately following the workout? 5. Rate the workout on a scale of 1-5. 5= great intense workout. 1= not intense. Describe how the workout might have been more effective? HAVE A PARENT/GUARDIAN SIGN HIS/HER NAME AT THE BOTTOM! This means he/she knows you did it. This make-up choice can only be used up to 5 times in a semester.

5. During fall and spring sports seasons Open Gym and/or Preseason Conditioning is run by coaches. During these sessions students can be involved in fitness conditioning or games. 40 minutes of activity satisfies a make-up. A student must document the activity, date, and obtain a written signature from the supervising coach to turn in to their PE teacher.
