Course Overview: During the semester we will be working as a whole class, in small groups, and individually.  Students will be assessed at the beginning and end of the semester on their reading (and associated) skills.  The curriculum includes reading, vocabulary, grammar, writing, and comprehension skills.

The class is structured for students to work on skills collectively in both large and small groups as well as individually.  The class will be broken into smaller groups which will rotate between stations that include: individual reading time, computer-based learning, and small group work with the teacher. Students will participate in each of the stations 2-3 times per week.

Supplies/Materials: Students will each receive an “r-book” (workbook) which they will be using through out the school year.  It will remain in the classroom, unless given express permission by the teacher to remove it.  Additional reading materials/handouts/assignments will be provided by the teacher.  All books MUST remain in the classroom and are not to be taken home.  In addition, students need to have the following supplies with them daily: black/blue ink pen, #2 pencil, lined writing paper.

Internet/Computer Use:  Each student is to have their ID card with them at all times.  An internet permission waiver should be on file with the school.  Students are to use ONLY their personal login/password—no sharing!  Internet use is only allowed if permission is granted by the teacher.  Unauthorized use will be subject to recourse.

Grading Criteria: Students will be graded on the following: participation/effort, daily assignments (whole group, small group, and individual), computer assignments, reading logs, and tests/quizzes.  A complete criterion will be available soon and will be posted on the website (see above).

Hall Passes: Students have 5 passes for the semester.  Each pass is good for no more than 10 minutes.  Use your passes wisely!

Class Rules: Respect yourself, respect others, and respect things.

§    Students will be held accountable for their behavior in class.

§    Ipods/MP3 players and Cell phone are strictly prohibited and will be taken if visible by the teacher.  These devices should be turned off and put away!  If a parent/guardian needs to contact their student they may call the main office and a note will be sent to the student.

§    Students who abuse their privileges or do not emulate appropriate behavior will experience one or more of the following consequences (based on severity of offence): loss of hall passes, loss of daily points, other privileges may be lost, after school detention and/or after school 2-hour Wednesday community service.

Class Website: The class website (see above) is an additional resource for students and parents.  As we continue through the semester more information will be posted.
