HEALTH SCIENCES AND CAREERS 2006-07

MRS. PFEIFFER

COURSE   DESCRIPTION

Health Sciences and Careers (HSC) is an elective year-long vocational class.  Its purpose is to provide 10 - 12th graders with an overview of the career options available in the health care field.  This will be done through lecture, textbook work, guest speakers, videos (documentaries, PBS, 48 hours, real ER), field trips and shadow experiences.  In the Battle Ground School District, this course serves as a prerequisite for Advanced Health Sciences and Careers and the Clark County Skills Center. (Dental Assisting and Health and Medical Careers).

LAB FEE AND SUPPLIES

Lab fee is $18.00   Fee covers the expense of certification for the American Red Cross Community CPR, Standard First Aid and 7 hrs Blood Borne Pathogen training.  If students have difficulty with the lab fee, please talk to Mrs. Pfeiffer.  Lab fees are due September 29th .

HSC textbooks are kept in the classroom and are only checked out for students who have long-term illnesses.  Students can make up textbook work before or after school or during their lunch.

GRADING

Grades will be determined by a point/percentage system.

A   93-100%         B + 89-87%          C+ 79-77 %            D+ 69-67 %

A- 92-90  %         B    86-83 %           C   76-73 %             D  66-60  %

                                B-   82-80 %         C- 72-70 %              F  59-0  %

Students with more than 15 absences (long term medical leaves excluded) lose an additional 10% from total grade.

Approx. 30%  Professional work ethic -exhibited in the classroom (10 points per day) correlates with actual work place standards (attendance, lack of tardiness, attentiveness, quality of work and team work) Instructor will conduct performance evaluations with students as able.  Students who are truant, falsify notes, cheat, plagiarize papers will risk losing 10% of their work ethic points and may face termination from the class. Cheating results in 0 points for all parties involved.

Approx. 30% Daily work- Most work is due at the end of each class.  Homework is weighted double and due at the beginning of the period, or else considered late.  Assignments not turned in on time lose 10% for each day overdue.  Excused absences will be allowed one day + number of days missed to make-up assignments.  Work needs to be readable and complete to receive full credit.

Approx. 30% Tests and projects- Tests have a minimum of 4 days warning.  Test make-ups for excused absences will occur on the most immediate date that the student returns to class, unless it is an extended illness or prior arrangements have been made.  For group and hands-on learning and applying knowledge learned, project options will be given for each unit.

Approx. 10% Journal- Journals will record current events, reflections on topics and medical terminology.

You’ll need a 80-100 page spiral notebook for this.

EXTRA CREDIT-Students who have turned in all daily work and made up all excused absence points may obtain extra credit for attending approved professional /club meeting including Medical Explorers, Dental explorer, SWMC Community Education offerings, Jr. Volunteering, First Responder classes, Red Cross blood drives, volunteering etc.  A journal entry is required.

CURRENT EVENTS-Students may make up professional work ethic points (10 per day) for excused absences by writing summaries on 2 articles from the newspaper, magazines, TV news reports about health related topics for each absence.  Extra credit is given for current events shared after work ethic points have been recovered.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES-Students who maintain a B average, exhibit good attendance and work ethic in the classroom will earn an opportunities to participate in enrichment activities including field trips, blood pressure screenings, wellness fairs, working blood drives, going to middle schools for CPR demonstrations, shadow experiences and attending leadership conferences (some activities have limited spaces).

BLOOD BORNE PATHOGEN TRAINING

National and Washington State Healthcare Career Education Standards mandate students to participate in the 7 hours of Blood borne Pathogen Training that most all health care workers need in order to be licensed and practice. We will be using State of Washington Health Dept and Red Cross Curriculum. Students who receive an 80 % and participate in all aspects of the training receive this certification.  Five dollars of the lab fee pays for a Red Cross certification card that has no expiration date.  This may be used to satisfy requirements in future education (Clark County Skills Center, Clark College EMT program, PHS Advanced HSC), volunteering (Southwest WA Medical Center) and possible employment requirements.

Students may also participate in the Tech Prep articulation agreement, and receive 1 credit from Clark College- HEOC 120, by paying a one time $15.00 fee (student may have already paid in a previous class) and submitting paperwork per time frame.

I understand the above, and that the attendance and work ethic expectations will influence my grade and ability to participate in enrichment opportunities.

Dear Parents:

The Health Sciences and Careers Program utilizes a variety of videos that have been purchased to help student's visualize anatomy, disease processes, diagnostic procedures, and treatments.  The documentaries and videos also give input from   health career workers / patients/ family members on their perspective on their health care situations.  If you have questions or concerns please contact me at 885-6500 ext 3987.  I'd be happy to talk to you.
