Dear Parents:
PHS is going
to implement a simple change in its
attendance expectations regarding
number of absences allowed. PHS
recognizes that it is extremely
important that students attend
school each day. Excessive absences,
whether excused or not, adversely
affect student achievement. Below is
a brief explanation of the changes
being implemented for the 2007-08
school year. PHS plans on enforcing
this plan as a pilot for the
first semester. The procedure
below will be evaluated in November
of this year. Fore more information
please contact administration.
-
Vacations (unless pre-arranged),
oversleeping, haircut
appointments, and other
non-school
activities that keep children
out of school should be avoided
during the school day. These
absences will be marked as
“X-Excused” in the student’s
attendance record until the
seventh absence in a semester.
These “X-Excused” absences will
become “Unexcused” after
seven have been
accumulated during a semester.
-
For all “Unexcused” absences,
make-up work will be given at
the discretion of the teacher.
This means that
teachers will not be required to
provide work missed
for any unexcused absence.
-
It is equally important that
students be at school on time.
Students who are frequently
tardy will become a focus of
concern,
since repeated tardiness impacts
the learning environment for
students and teachers.
Please review PHS
Student Handbook attendance policies
for further details.
