Encyclopedias and Quick Reference
There are many encyclopedias seemingly available for "free" online. But be aware! Many of them only contain part of the content of the articles in an effort to get you to purchase a subscription.
Bartleby.com The preeminent Internet publisher of literature, reference and verse providing students, researchers and the intellectually curious with unlimited access to books and information on the web, free of charge.
Encyclopedia.com (Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th ed.) Contains nearly 51,000 entries (marshalling six and one-half million words on a vast range of topics), and more than 80,000 hypertext cross-references.
Encyclopedia Smithsonian The Smithsonian Institution has developed this site to make their seemingly-endless supply of information more accessible. With links to research projects, publications, photographs, and connected resources, this site is quite user-friendly.
What about Wikipedia?While there is much useful information in Wikipedia, your teacher will not allow you to use information found only through Wikipedia in your research. One way to verify Wiki-information is by checking other sources: published print sources (books, journals, magazines, etc.) and those found through library subscription databases are best; otherwise look for reputable authors (scholars, professors, and teachers).
