Who will participate? All freshmen and sophomores will take the 2008 WASL. Conditions have changed in the state so that freshmen can take the test early without any negative consequences. The benefits of ninth graders taking the test early are all positive and beneficial. We believe many students will pass the test while those who don’t, will have had an opportunity to access the test and become more familiar with it in preparation for taking it next year. In addition, any junior or senior who still needs to pass any or all sections required for graduation will be taking the WASL. These students will be notified.

How will the schedule work? All students who have passed the reading, writing, and math WASL do not have to come to school until 11:00am: at which time regular classes will begin. This also means that any student who has not passed one or more of the three components of the test will need to take the test and arrive at 7:30am to take that test. Please note that juniors will be forecasting at that time and will receive a separate schedule for a specific day they need to meet with their counselor.

What will the bus schedule look like? Busses will run their normal times. This may create a challenge for those students who rely on the bus to attend school each day and don’t have to arrive until 11:00. Traditionally there have only been a few students who fall under this category during WASL testing. If your child must take the bus, they will remain in the commons area to study during WASL testing time until lunch begins at 10:30.

Reminder about cell phones and electronic devices. One of the most common testing violations is cell phones and other electronic devices. Such devices may invalidate your child’s test. Please do not call or text during school hours and during testing times. Students may not use these devices at any time during WASL or WASL breaks.

When will I know how my child did on the test? High School WASL Score Reports will be distributed to families in mid-June.

Questions? If you have any questions about the administration of the WASL or how it affects your student, please call (360) 885-5009.
