Brief to Prairie High School Community

Over the years, public high schools have been exploring ways to manage sexually explicit dancing. Prairie High School is no exception to this nationwide concern. In the past, we have been challenged with removing many students from a dance for such dancing. This type of dancing creates an unsafe environment for students that attend dances and staff that supervise dances. In order to provide great dances that are safe and fun, Prairie High School, with input from all stakeholders, has created a plan to address this type of dancing. Improving our dances is an ongoing process of revisiting the expectations while getting input from students, staff, and the school community.

The PHS Dance Plan is robust and has many components. However, it is very important to highlight three of the most critical elements: 1) All students must attend a yearly dance assembly where they receive information regarding appropriate dance behaviors as well as the new Face to Face, Leave Some Space dancing expectation, 2) Each student must take home a Dance Contract that outlines the dancing expectations as well as the strict consequences for not adhering to the expectations. This contract must be signed by the student and parent/guardian, and 3) Any student who is dancing in a sexually explicit manner will be asked to leave without warning and prohibited from attending any dances for one calendar year. PHS hopes that this strategic plan will provide a safe and fun environment for all students and staff during our school sponsored dances.
